JOKKMOKK Winter Market.
400 years of Sami trading

There has been a winter market in the Swedish town of Jokkmokk for the past 400 years. Sami from all over the North of Scandinavia arrive in town for the first weekend of February and buy and sell the things they need for the year. Formerly it would have been knife blades, axes and reindeer, today you can still buy these things along with snow mobiles, mobile telephone covers, and sealskin jackets costing over UKœ1,000. If you want you can take part in the reindeer racing, or have your nipples pierced by Kim.

The museum has an excellent display of local craftsmanship through the years. Well crafted clothing using the traditional materials of skins and wool can be seen at the Sami craft school, but the designs have changed to meet fashion. With modern communications Jokkmokk is now much easier to visit and the market is popular with visitors from the south of Sweden. The World Music evening even boasted a band from the Sudan. If you tire of Reindeer meat filled buns and Loatian food there are dog sled rides, reindeer sled rides or even a helicopter ride over the market site. The weather in Jokkmokk is usually around -30C and all the fur clothing on sale is very non PC but good at keeping you warm.
